Donald Leo Malick was a Denver artist whose wildlife paintings have been published and displayed throughout the U.S., including at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS). Born in 1929 in Olean, NY, Malick served as a staff artist for the Denver Museum of Natural History (now DMNS) from 1962 to 1973. He illustrated a major portion of Birds of Colorado, by Bailey and Niedrach, and made three trips to Africa. His first was a journey to Botswana as part of a 1969 museum expedition. Malick is also well-known for the 24 plates he contributed to the National Geographic Society's 1983 bird guide. His specialties were African birds and mammals. His favored media were watercolors and acrylic paint. Malick's work has been exhibited at the National Museum and Art Gallery of Botswana, as well as at DMNS; other museums have hosted temporary exhibits of his paintings. Malick also published 20 covers and many illustrations in magazines. He died in Denver in 1986.
