According to Roger Thompson's article "A Furious Master and his Blood-Sucking Servant" (published in The New England Quarterly, vol. 78, no. 2: June 2005), John Betts (1596-1663) came to New England on board the ship called Francis from Ipswich, Suffolk (England) in 1634. He married Elizabeth, probably the sister of Deacon John Bridge, and the couple settled in Cambridge. They lived on the southwest corner of Holyoke and Winthrop Streets, on land they had both purchased and been granted. The Betts were childless and John had difficulty with the law; he was once tried for the murder of his servant Robert Knight.
