James Finley Elliott was born in Preble, Ohio in May 1840. His family moved to Grant County, Indiana around 1847. Elliot became a school teacher and taught during the winter months. Shortly after the start of the Civil War he joined Company I of the 8th Indiana Volunteers. He lost his arm during the Vicksburg Campaign. After the war he continued his education and became a lawyer. In 1870 he married Sarah Conarroe and together they had four children. Elliott eventually became a judge in Grant County and served in that capacity until his death in 1909.
