Edmund P. Cerrute was born on Oct. 19, 1889 in New York City. He entered the Society of Jesus on Sept. 7, 1911. After spending three years at the Novitiate of St. Andrew-on-Hudson in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he was sent in 1915 to Woodstock College in Maryland, where he began his studies in philosophy. In 1918 Father Cerrute was transferred to St. Joseph's College, Philadelphia, Pa., where he remained until returning to Woodstock in 1922 to study theology. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1925 and spent the next two years at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J. Father Cerrute was Director of Athletics at Loyola College, Baltimore, from 1929 until 1935, when he joined the Jesuit community at Georgetown University. During his years at Georgetown he served as Assistant Prefect of Discipline, Assistant Director of Athletics and faculty moderator of both the intramural athletics program and the student newspaper, the Hoya. After leaving Georgetown in 1939, Father Cerrute served successively at the College of St. Francis Xavier, Brooklyn Preparatory School, and Regis High School, all in New York City. He died on Aug. 15, 1943.
