The State Board of Health, created in 1877 with members appointed by Governor, had general supervision over health of Illinois citizens (l. 1877, p. 208). Its primary responsibilities included investigation of contagious and infectious diseases among humans, power to quarantine when necessary, supervision over lodging houses and examination and licensing of physicians, surgeons, midwives and embalmers. Board also was responsible for gathering and maintenance of vital statistics which involved statewide system for registration fo births and deaths.

Board was abolished by Civil Administrative Code of 1917. Its regulatory powers and duties relating to practices of medicine and embalming were transferred to Department of Registration and Education. All other powers and duties were transferred to Department of Public Health.
