The City of Medicine, a division of Durham Health Partners, emerged in 1981 through the Chamber of Commerce as Durham's dominant industries shifted from textiles and tobacco to medicine and biotechnology. The City of Medicine initially served to promote Durham's new image and celebrate individuals for their achievements in medicine and biotechnology. The program expanded community outreach to educate local citizens about healthcare resources and partnerships.
