Frank Swan was a cousin to Frederick W. Macondray, Jr. As a child, Macondray had moved in 1849 with his father, mother, and brother from Dorchester to San Francisco, where his father established the commission house Macondray & Co. with partners R.S. Watson and James Otis. Macondray, Jr. eventually took over the company in 1875.
