The Seventh Brigade of the South Carolina Militia was commanded by Augustine William Washington (appointed a brigadier general in the United States Army in July 1798). Arnoldus Vanderhorst, governor of the state of South Carolina (1794-1796), served as colonel (1787-1788) and general (ca. 1806) of the 30th Regiment (Berkeley County Regiment) of the South Carolina Militia. Robert McKelvey served as major (ca. 1795), then lieutenant colonel of the 30th Regiment (ca. 1799-1814).
