Historian, photographer, and environmental activist, Carsten Lien (born 1926) has been a president of the Mountaineers (a Seattle-based hiking and climbing club formed in 1906), vice-president of REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) and a Seattle mayoral candidate, among several other civic and corporate activities. Lien's research has focused on the Olympic Peninsula and Pacific Northwest. His published works include Olympic Battleground: The Power Politics of Timber Preservation (San Francisco: Sierra Club Books, 1991), and Exploring the Olympic Mountains: Accounts of the Earliest Expeditions 1878-1890 (Seattle: The Mountaineers Books, 2001).
