Newsnegative Collection.
The Newsnegative Collection consists of materials donated from the following three Philadelphia newspapers.
I. Philadelphia Evening Bulletin: The newspaper was founded in 1847 by Alexander Cummings. It was one of the first newspapers in America to use the telegraph and the rotary press. The newspaper went through a succession of owners until it was purchased by William McLean, in 1895. Under McLeans' leadership the Philadelphia Evening Bulletins' circulation continued to increase. In 1947, the newspaper brought the defunct Record and began publication of the Sunday Bulletin. In 1955, the newspaper moved to its final headquarters located around the 30th and Market Streets area. During the 1960s and 1970s the newspaper fell upon hard times losing 7.5 million dollars in 1979 alone.
In April, 1980 William McLean III announced the sale of the Bulletin to the Charter Media Company, a subsidiary of the Charter Company based in Florida. The Bulletins' financial troubles eventually forced the Charter Media Company to turn complete control of the newspaper to its comglomerate partner. THe Bulletin permanently closed in January 1982.
II. Philadelphia Inquirer: The Newspaper was founded in 1829 by John Norvell and John Walker. Six months after the founding of the paper Norvell and Walker experiencing financial difficulties, sold the paper to Jesper Harding, a printer on the United States Gazette. In 1889, the paper was purchased by James Elverson, Jr. Under his leadership circulation increased, and in 1925 the newspaper moved to its present location at 400 North Broad Street. The paper was sold again, in 1929, to Curtis-Martin Newspapers, Inc. During the Depression Curtis-Martin fell upon hard tiimes and defaulted on several loans. The Elverson family regained control of the newspaper and sold it in 1936 to M.L. Annenberg. The hard driven Hearst circulation genius increased newspaper sales, surpassed competitors such as the Record, and purchased the Philadelphia Daily News. Knight-Newspaper, Inc. purchased the Inquirer from Annenberg for 5.5 million dollars in October 1969. Knight Newspaper, Inc. eventually became Knight-Ridder Newspaper, Inc. when the two companies merged in 1974. This company currently owns and operates the Philadelphia Inquirer.
III. Philadelphia Daily News: The newspaper was founded in 1925 by Lee Ellmaker, and a group of associates. The first home of the publication was the Jewish World Plant on 5th Street near Walnut. That same year the newspaper was sold to McFadden Publications who moved the paper to 15th and Cherry Street. In 1930, Lee Ellmaker purchased the newspaper back from McFadden Publications and moved it to 22nd and Arch Streets. In 1857, the Daily News was sold to Triangle Publications, the parent firm of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The company moved the Philadelphia Daily News to its current home located at 400 North Broad Street. In 1969, the Philadelphia Daily News was purchased by Knight-Ridder, Inc. who controls and publishes the Philadelphia Daily News and the Philadelphia Inquirer today.
