Thorp, Thomas
Variant namesThomas Thorp (28 Oct 1805-1854) was born in Alnwick, Northumberland, the son of Robert Thorp, clerk of the peace for Northumberland, and his wife Mary Ann Alder. He married Elizabeth Jane Tudor, youngest daughter of F. Tudor Esq of Queens Parade, Bath, on 9 Apr 1835, and they had two sons, Robert, born in 1838, and William Tudor, born in 1841. Thomas Thorp joined his father as an attorney at Thorp and Dickson in Narrowgate House, Alnwick. In Jul 1828 he was appointed a Master Extraordinary in the High Court Chancery. The 1841 census shows Thomas Thorp and his family living at Bailiffgate Street, Alnwick, occupation attorney at law. The 1851 census shows Thomas Thorp at the Railway Hotel, Tweedmouth, occupation attorney, and Elizabeth J. Thorp, attorney's wife living at 7 Bailiffgate Street, Alnwick. Thomas Thorp died in 1854, and his will was proven on 13 May 1854. Elizabeth Thorp continued to live at 7 Bailiffgate Street, and died on 2 Mar 1890. Dickson, Archer & Thorp solicitors operated from Narrowgate House, Alnwick, from the early 1800s until 2003.

William Newton (1786-1842) was born in Alnwick, the eldest son of William Newton and his wife Alice Ternent. He married Mary Smirthwaite on 26 Jul 1813, and their eldest son William was born in Alnwick in 1816. In 1820 William Newton was working as a nurseryman and seedsman, and living at Clayport Street, Alnwick, and sources give his occupation as gardener and/or seedsman until 1841. In 1851 Mary was living with her son, William, at Clayport Street, her occupation nursery and seedswoman, and William's occupation gardener. By 1861 they were living at a garden and seed shop in Henkle Street, Alnwick, with William's occupation recorded as nurseryman.

George James Tough (fl.1830s) was born c.1791 in Scotland. He married Ann Sandlands in 1840 in Alnwick. The 1841 census shows them living in Bailiffgate Street, Alnwick, occupation gardener.
