The call for the Convention of 1836 was issued by the General Council of the provisional government in December, 1835. Delegates were elected in February, 1836, and the convention met on March 1, 1836.

Robert Potter was elected delegate from Nacogdoches and also ad interim secretary of the Texas Navy. The convention wrote the Texas Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the Republic of Texas and organized the ad interim government.
