Soldier with 14th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery from 1861 to 1864 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a nurse on several hospital ships on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers for the remainder of the Civil War; originally of Geneva, Ohio; after the war moved his family and lived for a short time in McMinnville, Tenn., later moving to Norwalk, Ohio where he became a farmer; worked as a mason with his son, Fred W. Bowers, in San Diego, Calif. (1887-1888) where they built the first concrete sidewalk.
