Ingram family.

Hide Profile

Samuel Ingram and his wife, Jane, settled in Bastrop County in 1858. They moved there from Webberville, in Travis County, where Samuel had farmed since the mid-1850s. Prior to 1855, little is known about the couple, except that they married in Pike County, Illinois in 1852. Both of them had family in Illinois, and Jane Ingram had lived there all her life. Both Samuel and Jane had children from previous marriages; Samuel had three sons and a daughter and Jane had four sons and a daughter. Correspondence between these family members make up a major part of this collection.

Jane Ingram was born in 1810. She was 42 years old when she married Samuel, and a year later she had their first child, Mitchell Ingram. In 1858 she had a second son, Henry C. Ingram.

Mitchell Ingram figures prominently in these papers. His files contain the bulk of the material, and with their addition, the collection was renamed the Ingram Family papers. He lived in Garfield, Texas for most of his life. His principal interests, the Farmers State Alliance and the Garfield School System are reflected in the material in the collection. The files shed little light on the details of his life, but he is known to have been a farmer by profession, and he trained as a schoolteacher. He died in 1943.
