Clinton Jones True served in the Civil War as a captain in the 40th Regiment and a colonel in the 53rd Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. True later served as a consul on the island of St. Thomas, having been appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885). After disappearing in the early 1880s, later in the decade True was declared legally dead.
