Biography

Baritone Martial Singher was born in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, France on August 14, 1904. He studied singing at the Paris Conservatory with Andre Gresse and made his debut in 1934. He sang with the Paris Opera, and the Opera Comique until leaving occupied France for New York in 1940. Upon arriving in New York he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera, but didn't start singing until 1943 due to immigration difficulties. He has a successful Met career and went on to teach at the Curtis Institute, Mannes College and at the Music Academy of the West.
