Private in Company L of the 19th Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which was called up by Gen. P.H. Sheridan Oct. 9, 1868, for six months to drive the Kiowa, Comanche, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Apache to their reservations in the southwestern part of Indian Territory.

The 19th participated with the 7th U.S. Cavalry in the campaign, which culminated in a March, 1869, expedition against Little Robe's band of Cheyenne, who were forced to free two female captives: Anna Belle Morgan and Sarah C. White.
