Warner, George F. (George Frederic), Sir, 1845-1936
Variant namesA native of New Hampshire, George E. Warner enlisted as a private in the Independent Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery (6th) in 1862, and later joined the 10th U. S. Colored Artillery as first lieutenant. He rose to the rank of major and left the service in 1867. He moved to Onawa, Ia., where he married Mollie E. Morrison and worked as a merchant.
The 10th U. S. Colored Artillery was stationed with the Department of the Gulf and served on garrison duty in the New Orleans area throughout its service from 1864-1867. The regiment was formed from units previously designated as 1st Louisiana Colored Heavy Artillery and 1st Corps de Afrique Heavy Artillery.
