The Sabbathday Lake Shaker community in Maine was founded in 1783 and formally organized as a community in 1794. Today, it is the only active Shaker community remaining. The community consists of 18 buildings located on 18,000 acres of land, and includes a library and a museum. The Shakers support themselves with agricultural and arts and crafts projects. The Shaker Museum was founded in 1931.
