Christopher Valentine Winfree was from Lynchburg, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1848 as a civil engineer, and was employed on railroads before the Civil War. He served as a Confederate Army officer throughout the war, and following that, became involved in the family grocery business and tobacco manufacturing, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
