George E. Burd was an 1878 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He served as an assistant engineer in several ships and was awarded the Navy Cross for his work as Industrial Manager of the New York Navy Yard during World War I. Burd retired from the Navy in 1921 and died in 1924.
