Thomas Jefferson McKean was an Iowa politician who also had a long military career. McKean was born in Pennsylvania and studied at West Point from 1827-1831. He worked as a civil engineer and moved to Iowa in 1840. He served in the Mexican-American War, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant Major. He was appointed Paymaster of the Union Army in 1861 and was appointed Brigadier General. He commanded troops at Jefferson City, Missouri in 1862 and was given divisional command in the Army of the Tennessee. He held other command positions throughout 1863-1865, when he was mustered out of the volunteer service. After the war, McKean returned to Iowa where he was elected mayor of Marion. He served as a delegate to the Republican convention in Chicago, Illinois in 1869.
