Rev. Robert Knopwood was at the Sorrento Settlement in Victoria in 1803 and was the first Colonial Chaplain in Van Diemen's Land, having arrived in February 1804. with Lt. Governor Collins. He died September in 1838, aged 77 years.

Robert Knopwood was the first clergyman in Tasmania. In 1801 he obtained a post as chaplain in the navy and was appointed to the expedition of David Collins which sailed for Port Phillip on 27th Apr. 1803.
