The son of Daniel Joseph and Mary Frances (Palms) Campau, Daniel J. Campau Jr. was born in Detroit on Aug. 20, 1852. He was the Registrar of the Land Office in Detroit and customs collector. Interested in the Detroit River Terminal, Campau was also a prominent horseman.
