Born of Mark, Jr. and Clothilda Connell in Pennsylvania, 12 May 1884. Attended Millersville State College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the 138th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company I on graduation and served throughout the duration of the Civil War. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1865. Married Annie Maffet of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. in 1867. They had a daughter, Caroline. Shortly after his marriage, Connell enlisted to serve in the Indian Wars and moved westward. The government placed him in charge of the Indian Territory, where he served through 1887. In 1881 he was given charge of the Wells Fargo Company in the Indian Territory. The family moved to Los Angeles, then in 1898 moved to Phoenix. Caroline Connell married Charles Frederick Smurthwaite in 1907. They had one daughter, Carolann, born 26 March 1918. After a period of separation, Caroline and Charles divorced in 1934. Caroline opened a gift and antique shop in the Arizona Biltmore in 1929. Caroline became a nationally recognized authority on arts and antiques. On the death of her mother in 1971, Carolann continued to operate the shop. Carolann died 17 August 1982.
