Wellbeloved, Charles, Rev., 1769-1858.

Charles Wellbeloved was a unitarian divine and archaeologist. Born in London, he grew up at Surrey. In 1785, he became a student at Homerton Academy under Benjamin Davis. Due to ideological differences, Wellbeloved transferred to New College in 1787. He accepted his first cleric position at St. Saviourgate Chapel, York. His first act was to establish a Sunday school. In 1797, Wellbeloved was asked to be the divinity tutor at the Manchester Academy. The institution later moved to York and from 1803 until 1840 Wellbeloved served as its director. Wellbeloved was a founder of the York Subscription Library, the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, and the York Institute. He also studied the archaeology of York.
