After receiveing his doctorate (University of Chicago, 1950), and two years at the University of Missouri, Edmonds joined the University of Texas faculty where he remained until his retirement in 1984. He worked on solar surface inhomogeneities, model stellar atmospheres, high-dispersion stellar spectroscopy, line broadening theory, hydromagnetic stability, and radiative transer. He is probably best know for his studies in solar granulation and quantiative analysis of the spectrum of Procyon.
