Smith, Stephen, 1805-1875
Stephen Smith is known as the creator of the rolltop desk. He was born in Barnstable, Mass. in 1805 to James and Bethiel (Ryder) Smith. When Smith was eleven years old his mother died and he apprenticed with a cabinet maker in Sandwich, Mass.
