Physician James Edwin Guthrie operated a pharmacy with Shadrach Guthrie during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Salado, Texas.
In 1859, the Salado Joint Stock Company founded Salado College in Salado, Texas. The next year, the college opened with seventy-five enrolled students. In 1880, the stock company’s charter expired, and although the Salado College continued to operate, it ceased issuing diplomas. In 1885, the Salado public schools gained ownership of the college.
