Ian Taberner was the initial winner of the Kent State University Memorial Design Competition. However, his Canadian citizenship disqualified him from receiving the award. The University then attempted to award the prize to Taberner's associate, Michael Fahey, but Fahey refused to accept the award. Amidst some controversy, the University tried to reach an agreement wiht Taberner in which they would use the design and erect the memorial without granting the award, but the negotiations failed. It was then decided that the University would explore other options and the design by Bruno Ast, the second place winner, was the memorial finally built.
