Ida Turcan was born Ida Dicks in Mandeville, La. in 1918. She graduated from Touro Infirmary Nursing School in New Orleans in 1939 and entered the Army Nurse Corps the same year. Turcan served as an army nurse in North Africa and Italy during World War II, and returned to Louisiana in 1945. In 1957, she received a bachelor's degree in nursing education through the GI Bill. She also met her husband in 1957 in Baton Rouge, La., and they married in 1958. They lived in Arizona, Missouri, and Georgia before returning to Baton Rouge, La. in retirement.
