In 1900, John Newman lived briefly in Galveston, Texas, as a barman and farmer. He experienced the Hurricane of 1900, discussing his experiences in a letter to the Galveston newspaper in 1934. By that year, he had moved to Natal, South Africa, where he was composing his memoirs.
