Jan Broek was born and educated in Utrecht, The Netherlands. He taught at various universities in the United States and at the University of Utrecht before coming to the University of Minnesota's Georgraphy Dept. in 1948. Broek was chairman of the department from 1948-1957, and retired in 1970.

Broek was born in Utrecht, The Netherlands in 1904. He attended the University of Utrecht and received his Ph.D. from there in 1932. His thesis is entitled, Santa Clara Valley California: A Study in Landscape Changes . He was a faculty member at various American universities and the University of Utrecht before joining the Department of Geography at the University of Minnesota in 1948, serving as chairman from 1948 to 1957. His research and professional work focused in the area of human geography. He retired from the University in 1970 and died four years later.
