John G. Kemper was born on June 3, 1909, Lancaster, Ohio, the only son of Dr. William G. Kemper, M.D. and Helen Garner Kemper. He died September 3, 1991 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. John received a B.F.A. degree in 1931 from Ohio State University and a M.A. from Columbia University. In 1942 he left a successful career as a graphic designer in New York City to come to Western Michigan University where he spent his entire teaching career as a member of the Art Department until his retirement in 1970. John was best known as the designer of the W.M.U. seal.
