St. Paul's On-the-Hill Episcopal Church was officially organized in the St. Paul territorial court house in 1854, and was legally incorporated on December 23, 1856. The first service in the original church building, located at 9th and Olive streets in St. Paul's Lowertown area, took place on December 25, 1857. The convention that organized the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota was held at St. Paul's in 1858. The church moved in 1912 to its present location on Summit Avenue and Saratoga Street. The parish developed a reputation for establishing missions and new congregations, which has continued through the present day.
