Kober, Margaret B., 1906-1994
Margaret Bradshaw Batchelor was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1906 and graduated from Smith College in 1929. In 1931, she married Dr. Leslie Kober (1902-1981) of Phoenix, Arizona. Margaret Kober became the first woman elected to the Phoenix City Council in 1950 as part of a campaign to reform city government that also included Barry Goldwater. She served until 1956. She was a recognized leader in community civic, social welfare, and war agencies for 45 years. Among numerous tributes, Margaret Kober received the Women of the Year Award (Phoenix), the Award for Distinguished Public Service (Maricopa County Medical Association), and the Governor's Commission on Arizona Beauty for the Preservation of Camelback Mountain Project. Margaret Kober died on May 8, 1994 in Phoenix, Arizona.
