Llewellyn L. Hewett graduated from Shallotte High School (Shallotte, N.C.) in 1949. He then attended Wilmington College (later University of North Carolina at Wilmington) where he received his Associate of Arts degree in 1951. He graduated from the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1955 with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. Hewett worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), contributing to the first manned orbital flight of the space shuttle, Columbia (STS-1), on April 12-13, 1981. Hewett worked specifically with the Planning Research Corporation’s (PRC) design engineering contract in support of the space transportation system. According to a placard in the collection, Hewett’s efforts guided Lt. Col. John H. Glenn into orbit aboard MA-6 on February 20, 1962, and Lt. Cdr. M. Scott Carpenter into orbit aboard MA-7 on May 24, 1962. According to a magazine (unidentified) excerpt, Hewett worked on Ascension Island during NASA testing.
