William J. Gaughan began employment at the United States Steel Homestead Works in 1947 as a laborer at open hearth furnace number four. He worked turns for two years at Homestead before obtaining his degree at Duquesne University. A year before his graduation, Gaughan became an observer in the metallurgical department. Mr. Gaughan gained extensive management experience in the metallurgical division before becoming a Senior Designer of Operations Planning and Control in 1967. This group developed operations-oriented computer systems. He held this position until retirement in 1983.
