Born in Iowa. Illustrator for Harpers, Puck, Scribners and Judge magazines and the New York Herald. He painted seascapes and landscapes of New England in the "Ashcan School" style. He developed animation for the Edison Moving Picture Company in the early 1900's. Nankivel also was a toy designer, playwright and theatre director.
