Benjamin D. Paul joined the Stanford faculty in 1963; he held bachelor's and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago. He directed the Program in Medicine and the Behavioral Sciences from 1963 to 1971 and was chairman of the Department of Anthropology from 1967 to 1971. He made numerous field trips to the highlands of Guatemala (many with his wife Lois), living with and studying the Maya Indians of San Pedro la Laguna on Lake Atitlan.
