Richard Alan Nelson was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1947. After he graduated from Stanford University in 1969, he engaged in studied at Preastegaard School of Cinematic and Photographic Arts in Denmark. He then completed a Masters' degree in communications at Brighman Young University, where he researched Utah film history. Nelson later became a professional trade journalist in Los Angeles as an editor for the Miramar Publishing Company.
