One of the founders of Melbourne. Arrived at the Port Phillip Settlement, October 1835, and established a store and hotel. In 1838 issued the Melbourne Advertiser, in 1839 the Port Phillip Patriot and in 1840 the Geelong Advertiser. From 1851-1869, a member of the Legislative Council and served on many committees including the Commission on the goldfields.

Came to Australia with his parents in 1803, acquired the "Launceston Advertiser" in 1829, settled at Port Phillip 1835 and published its first newspaper, "The Melbourne Advertiser" in 1838. It ran for seventeen issues before being suppressed as illegal. In 1839 he published the "Port Phillip Patriot and Melbourne Advertiser" and in 1840 the "Geelong Advertiser". He was elected to the first Legislative Council in 1851 and sat until shortly before his death in 1869.

John Pascoe Fawkner arrived at Port Phillip Settlement in 1835 and established a store and hotel. Three years later he published the Melbourne Advertiser, in 1839 the Port Phillip Patriot, and in 1840 the Geelong Advertiser. From 1851 until his death in 1869, Fawkner was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
