John Pynchon was born in England, the son of William Pynchon. They came to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630 and eventually settled in what is now Springfield. William returned to England 1652, after a controversy developed over his religious views. John became a merchant in Springfield and established trading posts in Westfield, Northampton, Hadley, Hatfield, and Deerfield. He also served in various political capacities.

John Pynchon (c.1626-1702/03), colonial merchant and public servant, was the son of William Pynchon (c.1590-1662), the founder of Springfield, Mass. The Pynchons emigrated from England with John Winthrop's fleet in 1630, and settled for a time in Dorchester, Mass.
