Members of two Scots-Irish Presbyterian traditions, known as Covenanters and Seceders, began organizing nationally after the American Revolution. In 1782, the Reformed Presbytery of America and the Associate Presbytery of Pennsylvania merged to form the Associate Reformed Synod. In 1802, the Associate Reformed Synod divided into four synods and was organized as the Associate Reformed Church in North America; its General Synod dissolved in 1822 to unite with the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. The Associate Reformed Church in North America Synod of the South departed the denomination to form the Associate Reformed Synod of the South (1822-1934), predecessor of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (1935- ). In 1858, the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, General Synod (Covenanters) merged with the Synod of the Associate Presbyterian Church (Seceders) to form the United Presbyterian Church of North America.
