Hide Profile

After the schism of 1827/28, the Hicksite branch of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends did not appoint an Indian Committee of its own until 1837; this committee was formed primarily to protect the rights of the Senecas in New York in their dispute with the Ogden Land Company. The first Hicksite committee was laid down in 1850, with Representative Committee coordinating Indian concerns until the Yearly Meeting appointed a Joint Committee on Indian Affairs in 1869, after the proclamation of President Grant's peace policy. This committee was involved in the supervision of the Great Nemaha, Santee, and Otoe agencies, constituting the Northern Superintendency of Nebraska, until 1876. They appointed representatives to the Convention of Delegates of the Seven Yearly Meetings of Friends. In 1892 the Joint Committee was absorbed into the Committee on Philanthropic Labor, its work continued by a sub-committee of that body; it gradually reduced its activities until about 1912.
