Cambridge, Illinois author, Lincoln scholar, history professor and director of the Illinois State Historical Library. Pratt graduated from the University of Illinois in 1923 and after teaching for awhile, returned to complete his doctorate in history in 1930. He wrote his dissertation on "David Davis: 1815-1886."

Pratt, a Lincoln biographer, used primary sources to find Lincoln's actual income, taxes, landholdings and investments, political contributions and household expenditures and then blended these with biographical information to portray a different side of Lincoln's life.
