Under the direction of Charles Weiner (director of the Center, 1965-1969, 1971-1972), the study considered the various intellectual and practical questions necessary to determine the future level and direction of the AIP's efforts to document the history, philosophy, and sociology of physics. A variety of techniques were used to explore how the Center could best serve the physics community, individual scholars, and academic institutions. These included surveys, questionnaires, commissioned reports, special panels, and individual consultations involving leading physicists, historians, philosophers, sociologists, librarians, and archivists.
