English landscape artist John Brett was born near Reigate, Surrey. His remarkably detailed landscape paintings were influenced by his interest in geology, the writings of John Ruskin, and the work of the Pre-Raphaelites. Most of his later paintings are meticulously detailed landscapes and seascapes around the coast of Britain.
