San Quentin Prison is oldest (1852) and, at 5,000 inmates, (1960) largest prison in California state system. Located in Marin County, prison held both men and women before 1927. It is only prison in state with gas chamber and all prisoners convicted of first degree murder are sent there. Folsom Prison (1880) is located in northeastern Sacramento County.
