Chase, Joseph M.
Joseph Chase was the grandfather of Isabell Chase Burnett and the brother of Owen Chase. While Owen Chase was aboard the whaleship "Essex," an 85 ft. whale rammed the ship twice, which sunk in ten minutes. Twenty crew members escaped to boats with few provisions; eight survived, including Owen Chase. The story inspired Melville's MOBY DICK.
